Pre-Reception is a wonderful year of growing confidence, independence and discovery. As children prepare for the exciting next chapter of their education, our Pre-Reception provides a stimulating, nurturing environment where their curiosity is encouraged, their individuality celebrated and their love of learning continues to flourish.
From the September following their third birthday, children join our Pre-Reception class, building on the strong foundations established during Nursery and Pre-School. Guided by a qualified teacher and our experienced Early Years team, children enjoy an engaging balance of purposeful play, exploration and increasingly structured learning experiences, all carefully designed to support their individual development.
Building Strong Foundations for Learning
In Pre-Reception, children's natural curiosity becomes the starting point for increasingly exciting learning opportunities.
Through storytelling, early literacy and numeracy, creative exploration and collaborative activities, children develop the communication, thinking and problem-solving skills that provide the foundations for future learning.
As the year progresses, children gradually develop greater independence, concentration and confidence in their own abilities. Our approach ensures they are gently challenged and encouraged, while continuing to enjoy the freedom, creativity and imagination that make childhood so special.
Exceptional Opportunities, Every Day
One of the distinctive advantages of Pre-Reception at The Ryleys is the opportunity to benefit from the specialist teaching and exceptional facilities of our wider school.
Children enjoy weekly French, Music and PE lessons delivered by our specialist teachers, developing new skills, discovering interests and building relationships with familiar faces who will continue to teach them as they progress through the school.
Outdoor learning remains an important part of every day. From our Early Years playground and Secret Garden to the school's extensive meadow and all-weather sports facilities, children have wonderful opportunities to explore, investigate, develop physical confidence and enjoy the freedom of outdoor play.
During the summer term, children also enjoy swimming lessons in our school pool, a much-loved introduction to an activity that becomes a regular part of life at The Ryleys. Their first school trip, Nativity performance and Pre-Reception graduation are further memorable milestones in a very special year.
A Thoughtful and Reassuring Transition to Reception
At The Ryleys, preparing for Reception is a carefully planned journey, not a sudden change.
Throughout Pre-Reception, children gradually develop the confidence, independence and familiarity that make moving into Reception a natural and exciting next step.
Our Early Years and Reception teams work closely together to ensure a thoughtful, well-supported transition. Children become increasingly familiar with their future teachers, classrooms and the wider school environment through planned experiences and opportunities to spend time in Reception.
Importantly, many of the friendships formed during Early Years continue into Reception, giving children the reassurance of familiar faces as they embrace new opportunities.
During the summer term, a programme of transition activities and information events helps both children and parents feel confident and prepared for the new academic year.
And for families at The Ryleys, there is another important reassurance: children joining our Early Years have a secured place in Reception as part of their continued Ryleys journey.
There is no need to navigate a separate Reception admissions process. Instead, families can enjoy these precious early years knowing that their child's next educational step is already in place.
Our aim is simple: when September arrives, children feel excited, confident and ready for their next adventure, with the security of knowing that they already belong.
Individual Care, Every Step of the Way
Our Pre-Reception operates with a staff ratio of 1:8, with a qualified teacher providing expert guidance and support as children prepare for the next stage of their learning.
Every child also benefits from a dedicated Key Person who understands their individual strengths, interests and developmental needs, ensuring that they continue to feel supported, valued and encouraged.
We believe that close relationships with parents are essential. Through our secure Famly app, families receive regular updates, photographs and developmental observations, sharing in their child's achievements and everyday experiences.
Care in Every Detail
Our Pre-Reception day combines exciting learning experiences with familiar routines, nutritious meals and the care and attention that young children need.
Freshly prepared meals from our school kitchen, morning and afternoon snacks, and opportunities for rest and quieter activities all contribute to a happy, balanced day.
Breakfast is included for children arriving before 8.30am, together with a hot lunch, snacks and nappies where required. Children attending an Extended Day also enjoy a late afternoon High Tea.
Pre-Reception Opening Hours
Pre-Reception is open Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6.00pm, offering families the flexibility of term-time or all-year-round care.
Daily session options:

A minimum booking of two days per week applies.
Attendance options:

All Year Round: 50 weeks per year, closing for two weeks at Christmas
