From The Head - Friday 6th October 2023

Julia Langford, Headteacher of The Ryleys School, a private school in Alderley Edge, Cheshire

This morning, we were treated to a wonderful Harvest Festival assembly which has been a tradition in school for many, many years. We enjoyed a fantastically diverse range of performances and were thoroughly entertained.

Harvest time was originally celebrated by the Pagans and is just one of the many ancient Pagan celebrations, including Christmas, adapted from Winter Solstice and Celtic New Year traditions. These seasonal events originate in nature and the seasons, so have persisted in British folklore and heritage.

Before international imports became common, a successful harvest was essential for the community to survive through winter. This is why there has been a Harvest Festival for thousands of years in Britain.

Of course, with the abundance of food availability throughout the year now, the focus and significance of the harvest has changed, but the Harvest Festival celebration provides an important opportunity for us to think about those who don't have an abundance of food and to make a contribution to community food bank projects.

Our school community has once again risen to the occasion and you have been incredibly generous with your food donations. Every single item given makes a genuine difference to somebody's life. Thank you so much for the part you have played in this - it is truly appreciated.

Enjoy this week's newsletter and have a lovely relaxing weekend.
